About 30,000 women a year, according to the most recent research, experience birth trauma in the UK. Instead of being joyful and happy, the experience of giving birth has been frightening. Having a traumatic childbirth and developing PTSD can impair the Mother’s relationship with both her baby and her partner. Mothers may feel acute disappointment that childbirth was not the experience they were hoping for and may feel angry with the medical staff if they felt that the delivery wasn’t handled well. Often Mothers receive a diagnosis of Post-Natal Depression (PND) which doesn’t seem to fit and the treatment pathways for PND and PTSD are very different.
In this workshop Lynn will share her experiences of working with Peri-Natal trauma whilst managing the Primary Care Mental Health service, working closely with both the local Obstetric and Health visiting teams in order to promote awareness of Peri-Natal trauma and its consequences. This led to developing clearer pathways for service users within the area who were identified as requiring psychological input before and after giving birth.
The cost of the day workshop is £90 for the EMDR Association members and £105 for non-members (includes refreshments and lunch)
